A plant will not grow or reproduce unless its basic
needs are supplied. Read Luke 8:5-15. Make two
columns on a piece of paper. In the first columnsower.jpg (7691 bytes) make a list of all the different things that a seed needs before it can sprout. (In Deuteronomy 33:14 you will find another thing that plants can't live without.) In the second column make a list of all the things that you need to grow and be healthy. Are your needs similar to a plant's needs?

After you finish your list, try out this experiment.

Luke 8:5-15
"A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path; it was trampled on, and the birds of the air ate it up. Some fell on rock, and when it came up, the plants withered because they had no moisture. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up with it and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil. It came up and yielded a crop, a hundred times more than was sown." When he said this, he called out, "He who has ears to hear, let him hear." His disciples asked him what this parable meant. "This is the meaning of the parable: The seed is the word of God. Those along the path are the ones who hear, and then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. Those on the rock are the ones who receive the word with joy when they hear it, but they have no root. They believe for a while, but in the time of testing they fall away. The seed that fell among thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by life's worries, riches and pleasures, and they do not mature. But the seed on good soil stands for those with a noble and good heart, who hear the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a crop."
To Sprout? Or Not to Sprout? That is the Question!
You will need:
6 plastic resealable sandwich bags
21 bean seeds
cotton balls
water
fingernail polish
string

Instructions:
Paint three seeds with fingernail polish. Place these seeds in the first bag. Force all the air out of the bag and seal it. Place it in a sunny place.

Place three seeds in the second bag. Seal the bag and place in a sunny location.

Place three seeds in the third bag. Add six tablespoons of water. Seal the bag and place in a sunny location.

Place three seeds in the fourth bag. Add three cotton balls and six tablespoons of water (or just enough to dampen the cotton). Seal the bag and place in a sunny location.
Prepare the fifth bag exactly like bag number four, but place this bag in a dark place.

Prepare the sixth bag exactly like bag number four, but place this bag in the freezer.

Prepare the seventh bag exactly like bag number four, but shake all three of the seeds into one corner of the bag. Tie the three seeds securely in the corner with a string or rubber band.
Number 1-7 on the back of the piece of paper you used above and predict what will happen to each set of seeds. Watch your seeds for five days and record what happens each day. Were your predictions correct? Look at the list of plant needs that you originally made. Can you add anything new to it?
