Place your
seeds in a little water. Do your seeds float or sink? Soak them for at least an hour
(overnight is better). Carefully examine each seed. Look at each under a microscope or with
a magnifying glass. What has happened to the outside of the seed (seed coat)? You will
find that some of the seeds are made of two parts (cotyledon). These seeds are dicots.
Some of the seeds are made of only one part (cotyledon). These seeds are monocots.
Carefully open your seed and look inside. Do you see the baby plant (embryo)? You should
be able to identify the tiny leaves, stem, and root of the plant. This chart will help
you.
